Day trips from Târgu-Mureș

That lovely period of spending most of the time in the coziness and peace of our homes during the holidays is slowly coming to an end. Now it’s time to put on the knitted sweater your grandmother gave you as a gift for Christmas, find your cap and scarves and hit the road to explore the hidden treasures of Mures County!
Here are two destinations that can be perfect day trips for a group of friends or even for the whole family:

Sângeorgiu de Pădure and Bezidu Nou

The Rhédey Castle in Sângeorgiu de Pădure is a fascinating destination for those who like to recall the nostalgia of the old days. Opened last fall, the Rhédey Museum will make your visit even more special. The castle's exhibition hall commemorates Claudia Rhédey, the great-great grandmother of the current Queen of the UK and the other Commonwealth realms.

The castle is open on weekdays from 9 to 3 pm, on Saturday from 10 to 2 pm and on Sundays from 10 to 2 pm, and guided visits are allowed every hour.

After your visit at the museum, it is also worth visiting the historical Bezid Nou. The sad story of the former village is well-known to all Transylvanian people. The memorial designed by Árpád Sükösd, preserves the memory of the flooded village and it is symbolically placed on the lakeshore.

Before heading home, take a walk around the lake and try to imagine the former rooftops, the high temple towers and the little streets full of life, being loud from the laughter of the playing children.

Reghin

Starting with the churches of different religions through the workshops of the violin makers, Reghin welcomes both local and foreign tourists with exciting programs and sights.

One of the most significant sights of the city is the Evangelical Saxon church built in the Middle Ages, but also the Reformed and Roman Catholic churches, the old wooden church and the former synagogue all perfectly reflect the diversity of the city of Reghin.

What else could welcome the visitor in the center of a city which is famous for violin production, than Ádám Baróthi’s monument, called Violins? Feel free to enter the local workshops, this is definitely the best place to get a glimpse into the world of violin making!

During your visit, don’t forget to check out the ethnographic museum, where you can see different country costumes and also can learn more about the folk customs and traditions of the region.
The local tourist center can help you with guided walks:
